Project

Clean up of a hotspot of groundwater heavily impacted with a mixture of hexavalent chrome and xylene ahead of redevelopment. Paint pigment provided visual suggestion of contamination.

Contaminant

Hexavalent chrome and xylene

Challenges

Small footprint treatment area and system capable of handling 2000mg/l chrome and 30mg/l xylene. Solids pre-filtration of microscopic paint pigment particles.

The site was undergoing demolition and general earthworks to prepare the site for redevelopment. The traditional precipitation method for removal of chrome VI would require a large footprint area that would hinder these works.

Technologies employed

  • Semi-automated ion exchange unit
  • White Karbon - WK25 for xylene and WK40c for chrome VI
